Biography

Ronald N. Harty is a prominent researcher in the fields of microbiology and virology, particularly known for his work on virus-host interactions and the molecular dynamics of RNA virus assembly. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1985, followed by a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Virology from Louisiana State University Medical Center in 1991. He further expanded his expertise through a postdoctoral fellowship in Virology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York in 1993. Harty's research encompasses the biological significance of late stages of RNA virus assembly and egress, as well as the development of host-oriented therapeutics aimed at creating novel antiviral inhibitors. He studies the interplay between host innate immune responses and RNA virus infections, utilizing model virus systems including Filoviruses such as Ebola and Marburg viruses, Arenaviruses like Lassa fever and Junín viruses, and Rhabdoviruses including VSV and retroviruses such as HIV-1 and HTLV-1.
