Dr. Ronald Pelot

Biography

Ronald Pelot is a Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Dalhousie University, where he has played a significant role in advancing research in maritime safety and environmental risk analysis. With a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, he pursued his Ph.D. at the University of Waterloo, focusing on energy markets and environmental risk modeling. Before joining Dalhousie in 1994, he held an academic position in Engineering Management at the Royal Military College of Canada. He has authored and co-authored over 50 refereed publications and 125 conference proceedings. Pelot founded the Maritime Activity Risk Investigation Network (MARIN) at Dalhousie in 1997, developing software tools for maritime safety analysis and spatial risk assessment. His current research interests include maritime traffic modeling, coastal zone management, and the risks associated with Arctic shipping, particularly with the impacts of extreme weather on fishing fleet safety. Pelot is also involved in projects optimizing search and rescue operations and forecasting future shipping patterns in the Arctic. As a leading figure in his field, he serves as the Director of the Centre for Risk Management at Dalhousie and as an Assistant Dean for Engineering Co-operative Education, fostering a strong collaborative environment.
