Biography

Ronald S. Rock is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Chicago. His research focuses on the actin cytoskeleton, myosins, and the use of optical tweezers and TIRF microscopy to study single molecules and structural biology. He aims to understand biological motion, specifically how motor proteins navigate the actin cytoskeleton to dynamically organize cells. By employing advanced single-molecule fluorescence microscopy, his laboratory observes myosins interacting in vitro and in whole cells. Rock's work utilizes structural biology tools to explore how the architecture of myosins and their quaternary structure regulate motility. He has produced significant contributions to the field, evidenced by multiple publications including articles in renowned journals such as Nature and Methods in Molecular Biology. He completed his Ph.D. in Chemistry at Caltech and carried out postdoctoral research at Stanford University. He has received several awards for his contributions to biochemistry and molecular biology, highlighting his expertise in the field.
