Professor Ron Roy received a BS in Engineering Physics from the University of Maine, an MS in Physics from the University of Mississippi, and MPhil and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Yale University. He has previously served as Professor and Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Boston University, Senior Physicist at the Applied Physics Laboratory, and Associate Research Professor in Bioengineering at the University of Washington, as well as research staff at the National Center for Physical Acoustics. A fellow and Vice President of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), he is also a recipient of the ASA Helmholtz-Rayleigh Interdisciplinary Silver Medal. At Oxford, Professor Roy has been leading the Engineering Science Department since 2019. His research interests lie in the application of physical acoustics to biomedical problems, industrial ultrasonics, and acoustical oceanography, with a specific focus on sonoluminescence, acoustic cavitation dynamics, and the use of nanoparticles in deep tissue optical imaging.
