Biography

Ron Spice graduated from the University of Alberta in 1985 and completed his residency in Family Medicine in Edmonton. He practiced full-scope rural medicine in High Level and Claresholm, Alberta from 1987 to 2001. Since 2001, he has undergone additional training in Palliative Medicine and has worked as a Family Physician and Palliative Consultant, currently providing clinical services with the Calgary Zone Rural Palliative Consultation Service, while also serving as the Zone Clinical Department Head for Alberta Health Services in the Department of Rural Medicine. He is the Academic Rural Director in the Department of Family Medicine at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. Dr. Spice's research primarily focuses on palliative care, particularly the service delivery aspects of hospice/palliative care. He has been involved in several projects investigating the use of web-based videoconferencing to support palliative patients in their homes, as well as exploring the experiences of palliative patients and family physicians caring for them in Calgary.
