Biography

Ronan McCrea holds graduate degrees in law and political science and joined University College London (UCL) in 2011. He previously served as a lecturer at the School of Law at the University of Reading and worked as a référendaire (judicial clerk) in the chambers of Advocate General Poiares Maduro at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. He was a visiting professor at Central European University in Budapest from 2010 to 2018 and served as a Jean Monnet Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence during 2014-2015. McCrea is an Associate Academic Fellow at the Inner Temple and is known for his work on the future of the European Union, the intersections of law and religion, and liberalism. His recent book, 'The End of the Gay Rights Revolution,' published in 2025, critically assesses the threats to freedoms gained during the sexual revolution. McCrea's legal expertise also includes advising non-governmental organizations on issues litigated before the European Court of Human Rights. He is a regular columnist for an Irish newspaper, where he discusses legal matters related to the EU.
