Rónán Riordan is an Assistant Professor of Public Law at Maastricht University and an Affiliate Research Fellow at the Jacques Delors Centre in Berlin. His PhD research explored the relationship between the Court of Justice of the European Union and the EU legislative branch. He conducted a regulatory field study examining the implementation of the principle of mutual recognition in legislative instruments, considering the Court’s influence on legislative negotiations from a doctrinal standpoint. Building on this foundational work, Rónán's current research agenda in Maastricht investigates how mutual recognition operates as a mode of regulatory and administrative governance and the associated legal frameworks. Before his current post, Rónán held several academic roles including Research Associate on the CIVICA-funded ‘Contesting the Court’ project, Visiting Scholar at the Department of Law of the European University Institute, and Visiting Fellow at the Historical Archives of the European Union. His published works have evolved from collaborative projects examining the interactions between European Union law and Irish law, utilizing a mixed-method approach and resulting in a series of peer-reviewed papers published between 2020 and 2022. Rónán holds a Bachelor of Arts from University College Dublin, focusing on Politics, International Relations, and Sociology (2016), and a Master's in Common Law from the Sutherland School of Law in UCD (2018). He defended his PhD in European Union Law and Governance at the Hertie School in 2024.
