Biography

Ronit Ghosh is a Teaching Fellow in the Music Department at the University of Chicago. His research interests encompass Bengali studies, Indian film media cultures, sound studies, media and critical theory, popular music studies, ethnomusicology, media archaeology, and modern Bengali songs (adhunik Bangla gaan). Ghosh's academic work focuses on the evolution of musical listening and the cultural assumptions that guide listening and performance practices in Bengal during the early decades of the 20th century, particularly the impact of radio and gramophone on music perception. He aims to study how media ecologies and technological equipment influence and shape musical thought in 20th century India. Ghosh completed his Erasmus Masters in media-arts aesthetics across four countries in Europe before joining the University of Chicago. His larger interests also lie in the fields of aesthetic philosophy and sound studies, contributing to discussions on popular music in contemporary contexts.
