Dr. Ronnie Berntsson

Biography

Ronnie Berntsson is a Professor specializing in Structural Biology at Umeå University. His research focuses on Type 4 Secretion Systems (T4SSs) in Gram-positive bacteria and their role in the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes. His work examines the protein machinery responsible for bacterial conjugation, highlighting how T4SSs efficiently transfer DNA and proteins between bacterial cells. Berntsson's studies involve structural and biochemical analyses of F+ T4SS proteins and their functions, utilizing techniques such as X-ray crystallography and cryo electron tomography. He aims to provide high-quality structural information on G+ T4SSs to aid in the discovery of inhibitors that target these systems. His ongoing research includes analyzing DNA processing mechanisms and the regulatory expression of T4SS proteins, particularly in relation to biofilm dispersal in microbes like Vibrio cholerae. Through his work, Berntsson contributes to the understanding of how bacteria develop antibiotic resistance, which is crucial for addressing rising nosocomial infections worldwide.
