Biography

Rory Finnin is a Professor of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Cambridge, where he also held the position of Head of the Department of Slavonic Studies from 2014 to 2018. He received his PhD with distinction in Slavic Languages and Comparative Literature from Columbia University and has completed several certificates from the Harriman Institute and the Institute for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia. With experience as a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer in Ukraine, Finnin has launched the Cambridge Ukrainian Studies program, overseeing numerous exhibitions and cultural events that promote understanding of Ukraine’s language and culture. His primary research focuses on the interplay of culture and identity in Ukraine, particularly studies of colonial history and Crimean Tatar literature. Finnin is also engaged in broader research interests like nationalism studies and cultural memory in the Black Sea region. His book, 'Blood: Stalin's Crimean Atrocity Poetics of Solidarity', published by the University of Toronto Press in 2022, has received multiple international awards in fields related to Ukrainian Studies and genocide studies. He is committed to mentoring MPhil and PhD students and has supervised many who have gone on to achieve positions at leading universities.
