Rory Stanton is a Senior Lecturer in the Human Resource Development (International Development) program at the Global Development Institute (GDI), University of Manchester. Initially starting in the private sector, Rory worked for five years with UNICEF in Southern Africa as an Assistant Project Officer on the organization’s HIV/AIDS Prevention Project in Zimbabwe, followed by a role as Communications Officer in Lusaka, Zambia. He completed his Master of Arts in Sociology and Development Anthropology at University College Cork in Ireland before pursuing doctoral studies at the Institute of Development Policy Management. His research in the Zambian context explored the disparities in development practices as conducted by large NGOs and the conflicting aspirations resulting from global migration practices. Following the completion of his PhD, Rory transitioned back to academia as an educational policy consultant before taking on various leadership roles at the University, including co-directing the HRD (International Development) program. He has supervised 60 Master's students and has focused research on themes including HRD, gender issues, and the roles of NGOs in development.
