Dr. Rosa Bacchetta

Biography

Rosa Bacchetta, MD, is a pediatrician specializing in immunology, aiming to challenge the limits of 'inexplicable' and 'untreatable' diseases. Her professional goal is to apply current scientific knowledge to understand the mechanisms of impaired cellular immune function that underlie various clinical manifestations, ultimately leading to the development of curative treatments. Bacchetta’s lab focuses on genetic autoimmune diseases by investigating the pathogenesis of genetically determined autoimmunity to improve diagnostics and explore novel cell and gene-editing-based therapies to cure diseases. Her research specifically studies how mutations in key immune tolerance genes differentially affect regulatory T cell (Treg) and effector T cell (Teff) functions in affected patients. The lab aims to facilitate gene correction for IPEX syndrome and other genetic diseases associated with immune dysregulation, providing patients with novel therapeutic options. Working closely with the Roncarolo Lab, they utilize innovative high-dimensional single-cell technologies available at Stanford to understand the cellular and molecular aspects of altered immune systems and to restore regulation of immune responses.
