Dr. Rosa Urbano Gutierrez

Biography

Rosa Urbano Gutierrez is a Professor of Architecture at the Manchester School of Architecture, where she leads the Non Standard Habitats research design studio. With a background in architecture from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid and a Master's in Design Technology from Harvard, she has also conducted PhD studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Previously, she served as a Reader in Architecture at the Liverpool School of Architecture, taking on roles such as Research Lead and MArch Programme Director. She founded the Experimental Material Ecologies Research Group (EMERG) and established laboratories, including ECALab and HouseLab, focusing on sustainable architectural design and innovative materials. Her research emphasizes the interface of material technology and user wellness, resulting in numerous projects and publications, including works on energy-efficient designs and biophilic frameworks. She has supervised various PhD candidates and has been involved in international collaborations and exhibitions showcasing her research on ceramics and architectural environments. Professor Urbano Gutierrez continues to develop academic resources and innovative methodologies to enhance architectural education and practice in sustainability.
