Biography

Roz Coggon is a Principal Research Fellow at the University of Southampton, focusing on the role of hydrothermal fluids in the formation and evolution of the ocean crust. Her research emphasizes the quantification of thermally driven chemical exchanges in the aging ocean crust and their influence on global biogeochemical cycles. The ocean crust, produced by submarine volcanic mid-ocean ridges, covers two-thirds of the Earth's surface. However, it remains relatively unexplored, particularly regarding the seawater that circulates through cooling ocean crust, reacts with rocks, and transports heat and chemicals. Roz has developed methods for reconstructing past ocean chemistry by studying the fluid chemistry recorded in low-temperature hydrothermal minerals. She plays a pivotal role in scientific ocean drilling projects, serving as co-lead editor for the '2050 Science Framework: Exploring Earth Scientific Ocean Drilling,' which guides scientists in understanding the fundamental connections between Earth system components. As the leading scientist for International Ocean Discovery Program projects, she investigates the history of hydrothermal interactions and microbial communities living on the seafloor, contributing valuable insights into climate change and ocean circulation patterns in the Atlantic Ocean.
