Biography

Rosaly M. C. Lopes is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Astronomy at Cornell University. She holds a B.Sc. in Astronomy and a Ph.D. in Planetary Science from University College London, UK. Lopes is also a Senior Research Scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the planetary journal 'Icarus'. Her research focuses primarily on planetary geology and volcanology, with a specific emphasis on Mars, Io, and Titan. She has been an integral part of significant space missions, serving as a member of the Galileo's Near-Infrared Mapping Spectrometer team from 1991 to 2003, and as part of the Cassini Titan Radar Mapper from 2003 to 2019. Currently, she is the Principal Investigator for a NASA Astrobiology Institute project titled 'Habitability Hydrocarbon Worlds: Titan Beyond'. Lopes is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Geological Society of America, and the American Geophysical Union. Her contributions to the field have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Carl Sagan Medal from the American Astronomical Society, the Ambassador Award from the American Geophysical Union, and the NASA Exceptional Public Service Medals.
