Rosana Risques is an Associate Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology at the University of Washington, Seattle, since 2019. Her research primarily focuses on the study of somatic mutations in the context of aging and cancer. The primary goal of her work is to understand how somatic evolution contributes to cancer risk, leveraging this knowledge to develop biomarkers for early cancer detection and prediction. The Risques Lab is particularly interested in examining genetic alterations that contribute to aging-related cancer, including telomere shortening and mitochondrial dysfunction. Current projects in the lab include applying ultra-accurate deep sequencing to characterize age-related somatic mutations associated with cancer risk, as well as developing techniques to detect cancer mutations through liquid biopsies, tracing somatic evolution based on polyguanine tract mutations. Dr. Risques has held various academic medical appointments at the University of Washington, progressively advancing from Acting Instructor to Associate Professor.
