Roselia Mendez Murillo conducts culturally-grounded communication research aimed at enhancing the academic, relational, and mental wellbeing of minoritized communities. Her work examines how family members who are mono-English speakers communicate to support Latina/o/x/e language brokers. Murillo is further exploring the experiences of separated Latina/o/x/e immigrant families who have undergone stepwise migration. Ultimately, her goal is to uncover assets and resources at multiple levels (e.g., intrapersonal, interpersonal, community, institutional, policy) to reduce academic health inequities in Latinx/e communities in the United States. She utilizes quantitative and qualitative methodologies, including limited longitudinal surveys, focus groups, and individual interviews (both virtual and face-to-face), as well as cross-sectional surveys to explore attitudes and behaviors among Latina/o/x/e individuals and families. Additionally, she analyzes data to produce practical recommendations for key stakeholders, including community members, therapists, and community organizations. Murillo's qualitative work specializes in conducting interviews with Latina/o/x/e families on themes of stress, resilience, and thriving within the context of language brokering and undocumented status, particularly for those who are living separated due to migration.
