Roselia Mendez Murillo conducts culturally-grounded communication research to enhance minoritized communities’ academic, relational, and mental wellbeing. She studies ways family members who are mono-English speakers communicate to support Latina/o/x/e language brokers and is further exploring the experiences of separated Latina/o/x/e immigrant families who have undergone stepwise migration. Her ultimate goal is to uncover the assets and resources at multiple levels (e.g., intrapersonal, interpersonal, community, institutional, policy) to reduce academic and health inequities within Latinx/e communities in the United States. Roselia employs quantitative and qualitative methodologies, including limited longitudinal surveys, focus groups, individual interviews (both virtual and face-to-face), and cross-sectional surveys to explore the attitudes and behaviors of Latina/o/x/e individuals and families. She analyzes data to produce practical recommendations for key stakeholders, including community members, therapists, and community organizations.
