Biography

Rosemary Knight is a Geophysics professor and Senior Fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment at Stanford University. Her research focuses on the innovative use of geophysical methods to understand hydrologic processes occurring within the top kilometer of the Earth. In 1985, she coined the term 'hydrogeophysics,' a sub-discipline that has seen significant growth over the past three decades. Her current work integrates geophysical imaging with remote sensing, aiming to evaluate and manage groundwater resources. Knight collaborates with groundwater managers in the western U.S. through laboratory and field experiments, and computer modeling, to develop new methodologies for acquiring, processing, and interpreting geophysical data. In her teaching endeavors, Knight emphasizes the importance of 'geo-literacy,' particularly pivotal for graduates in Earth science. She has pioneered courses such as the Water Course, where students engage in projects that highlight water-related issues at a community level. Knight also leads an educational initiative called I-Earth, which aims to enhance Earth science education in the 21st century, recognizing its necessity in understanding planetary systems.
