Rosental Alves began his academic career in the United States in March 1996, bringing with him 27 years of experience as a professional journalist and seven years as a journalism professor in Brazil. He moved to Austin from Rio de Janeiro, where he was managing editor and a member of the board of directors for Jornal Brasil, one of the most important Brazilian newspapers, where he worked for 23 years. In 1995, he was selected as one of 200 candidates for the holder of the Knight Chair in International Journalism, established with a $1.5 million endowment from the James L. and John S. Knight Foundation. In 2002, he received a $2 million grant from the Knight Foundation to create the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, a four-year project focused on training journalists across Latin America and the Caribbean, based at the School of Journalism in Austin. Over the past decade, Alves has served as a foreign correspondent in Spain, Argentina, Mexico, and the United States, working with Jornal Brasil. In 1991, he established an online, real-time finance news service, a pioneering effort in Brazil. In 1994, he managed the launch of Jornal Brasil's online edition, making the Brazilian newspaper available on the Internet. At the University of Texas at Austin, Alves focuses on areas of teaching and research including international reporting, journalism in Latin America, and internet journalism.
