Biography

Rosina Lozano is a historian focusing on United States history, particularly on Latino/a/e history and the American West. Her research investigates migration, immigration, and comparative studies in race and ethnicity. Lozano's notable work, 'American Language: History Spanish United States' published by the University of California Press in 2018, explores the historical and political significance of the Spanish language in the U.S. from the Mexican cession of 1848 through World War II, addressing contemporary issues regarding multilingualism and Spanish-language rights. The book, awarded the PROSE award in Language and Linguistics in 2019, systematically analyzes the role of the Spanish language in U.S. politics and local debates regarding immigration and Americanization. She is currently writing a book tentatively titled 'Intertwined Roots: Mexican Americans Native Americans Southwest,' which examines the dynamic relationships between these groups from 1848 to the 1970s, contextualizing U.S. policies and their socio-ethnic consequences. Lozano has received multiple fellowships including from the Huntington Library and the New Mexico Office of State Historian and has held a postdoctoral fellowship with the National Academy of Education/Spencer Foundation at Stanford University.
