Biography

Professor Hannan is an internationally recognized laboratory scientist whose work on ribosome biogenesis has led to new treatment paradigms for cancer, particularly through drugs that activate nucleolar stress. He received his PhD from the University of Tasmania in 1994 and undertook postdoctoral research in the USA. Returning to Australia in 2000, he has held prominent positions at the Baker Medical Research Institute and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne. Professor Hannan has brought together multidisciplinary teams of laboratory and clinician researchers, forging industry collaborations to devise high-quality RNA polymerase inhibitors and has initiated clinical trials for a range of hematologic cancers. His extensive contributions to the field were acknowledged by his recent appointment as the inaugural Centenary Chair in Cancer Research and Head of the ACRF Department of Cancer Biology and Therapeutics at the John Curtin School of Medical Research, Australian National University.
