Dr. Roumen Milev completed his medical degree in Sofia, Bulgaria in 1983, and subsequently obtained his specialty in Psychiatry in Bulgaria. He is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (UK) and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. In 1995, he defended his PhD in Forensic Psychiatry. After moving to Regina, Canada, he became the Medical Director of a Mental Health Clinic in 2001 and was appointed the Clinical Director of the Mood Disorder Research Treatment Service in Kingston the same year. Between 2007 and 2017, he served as the Head of the Department of Psychiatry at Queen’s University and its affiliated teaching hospitals. From 2017 to 2023, he was the Director of the Centre for Neuroscience Studies at Queen’s University and was appointed Vice President of Medical Academic Affairs at Providence Care Hospital in 2018. Dr. Milev is the Executive Chair of the Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT) and has made significant contributions to research in areas such as Depression, Bipolar Disorder, and mental disorders, with a focus on stigma, sleep architecture, and neurostimulation treatments. He has authored 250 peer-reviewed publications and has been actively involved in teaching and supervising graduate and postgraduate students. He has co-authored guidelines for the management of patients with Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Disorders.
