Biography

Rowena Kennedy-Epstein is a feminist scholar specializing in women writers and artists in twentieth-century America. She focuses on the works of Muriel Rukeyser, with her book "Unfinished Spirit: Muriel Rukeyser’s Twentieth Century" receiving the Modern Language Association Matei Calinescu Prize for distinguished work in literature. Her research explores the intersections of gender politics and literary aesthetics, and she has published extensively in notable journals such as Modern Fiction Studies and The Paris Review. Currently, she is working on a biography of Rukeyser, which has garnered an NEH Public Scholars Fellowship. Kennedy-Epstein has also served as a visiting scholar at the Oxford Centre for Life-Writing and is a Cullman Center Fellow at the New York Public Library. Her teaching incorporates a wide range of topics, focusing on modernist women writers and feminist theories, along with critical race studies and political activism. Kennedy-Epstein supervises PhD students on topics including modernist women’s anti-fascist journalism and the influence of war on women's writing. Her ongoing projects continue to challenge the hegemonic narratives shaped by Cold War culture.
