Biography

Sir Roy Anderson is a Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at Imperial College London and Director of the Centre for Neglected Tropical Disease Research. With an extensive career in leading epidemiological studies, Sir Roy has made significant contributions to the understanding of infectious diseases through interdisciplinary approaches that merge medicine, biology, and mathematics. He has authored 450 scientific articles and served on numerous committees advising public health and disease control for leading international organizations such as the World Health Organization and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Sir Roy has held prestigious academic positions, including Rector of Imperial College London and Director of Wellcome Centres focused on infectious diseases. Acknowledged for his impact on the field, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1986, becoming a Founding Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1998, and a Foreign Associate Member of the Institute of Medicine in 1999. His contributions have been recognized with a knighthood from the Queen in 2006. Throughout his career, Sir Roy has also engaged in significant non-academic roles, such as Chief Scientist at the UK Ministry of Defence and a non-executive director at GlaxoSmithKline.
