Dr. Roy Bar Sadeh

Biography

Roy Bar Sadeh is a Lecturer in the Department of History at the University of Manchester, specializing in the history of the Islamic world. His research focuses on intellectual history within a global multi-lingual framework, particularly in relation to the Middle East, South Asia, and Eurasia. Bar Sadeh has a rich background in social intellectual history, with extensive experience contributing to regional and international debates on sovereignty, citizenship, and social difference during the 19th and 20th centuries. He completed his Ph.D. in History at Columbia University in 2022, receiving the prestigious Ab Imperio Prize for his doctoral dissertation. Beyond his academic work, he engages with the public through articles and media appearances, including contributions to Haaretz and BBC Radio 4. His current research explores Muslim thinkers and their reimagining of sovereignty and belonging, particularly in the context of vulnerable populations across the Ottoman Arab provinces, British India, and the Russian Empire. He has a book project titled 'Muslims and the Minority Question: Global History, 1856–1947' under contract with the University of Chicago Press, which is set to provide a transimperial perspective on minority politics from the Crimean War to contemporary times. His scholarly work has appeared in several peer-reviewed journals, demonstrating his extensive engagement in the field of historical studies concerning the Islamic world.
