Biography

Roy Kemmers is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Erasmus University Rotterdam, specifically within the Department of Public Administration and Sociology. His research focuses on cultural sociology, particularly the processes of cultural change and the evolving meanings associated with topics such as politics, religion, identity, gender, and ethnicity. Kemmers's PhD project explored contemporary popular discontents in politics through a cultural sociological lens, aiming to develop a theory of political discontent that underscores the significance of ordinary people's definitions of their circumstances and society. He is actively working to expand his research agenda on everyday anti-institutionalism, considering it a fundamental aspect of populism and studying its manifestations in seemingly non-political domains of daily life. In addition to his research, Kemmers teaches at Erasmus University College, where he covers highlights in Sociology, Qualitative Research Interviewing, and a minor in Global View Migration, while supervising undergraduate theses. He also serves as the chief editor of the Dutch quarterly 'Sociologie Magazine'.
