Biography

Roy E. Welsch is the Eastman Kodak Leaders Global Operations Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with a focus on Management and Statistics within the Sloan School of Management. He began his academic journey at MIT in 1969 as an Assistant Professor, advancing to Associate Professor four years later and promoted to Professor in 1979. Welsch also held the Leaders Manufacturing Chair from 1988 to 1993. His research has notably contributed to the development of econometric, financial, and statistical modeling systems during his tenure as a Senior Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research from 1973 to 1979. He served as Co-Director of the MIT Statistics Center from 1981 to 1989. Welsch is well-known for his book on regression diagnostics co-authored with Edwin Kuh and David Belsley, focusing on themes such as robust estimation, multiple comparison procedures, and nonlinear modeling. His research interests currently include robust process control, experimental design, and credit scoring models, along with diagnostics for model assumptions and reliability measurement in electronic commerce. Beyond his research, he is actively teaching courses on data analysis and applied statistics, emphasizing regression modeling and experimental design in financial marketing context. Welsch is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, the American Statistical Association, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
