Biography

Royce W.S. Chen is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Vice Chair for Education. He completed his undergraduate studies at Yale University, obtaining a B.A. in Music, before earning his M.D. from Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Chen's residency in ophthalmology was completed at Columbia University, where he served as Chief Resident, followed by a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami. His clinical practice is focused on the surgical and medical management of vitreoretinal diseases, and he has particular expertise in conditions like diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, and uveitis. In addition to his teaching and clinical responsibilities, he is actively engaged in research related to retinal imaging, artificial intelligence, and innovations in surgical education. He has received numerous accolades for his contributions to teaching, including the John Martin Wheeler Memorial Teaching Award. Dr. Chen also plays a significant role in mentorship through his involvement with the Vit Buckle Society and the National Eye Institute’s Health Education Program.
