Biography

Ruairidh Tarvet is a lecturer in Scandinavian Studies at the University of Edinburgh, where he also serves as the Director of Postgraduate Research and Deputy Director of Research in the Department of European Languages and Cultures (DELC). He completed his MA (Hons) in Scandinavian Studies and German European Union Studies in 2014 and earned his PhD in Scandinavian Studies in 2018, focusing on linguistic identity in the Danish-German border region. His published monograph, 'Re-Imagining Sleswig', explores the interplay of regional, national, and transnational identities within minority communities. He is currently a principal investigator on the project 'Borders Living Spaces: De-Bordering Re-Bordering Identities in Europe', which examines the complex impacts of national border closures amid the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical conflicts such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Tarvet's research interests include nationalism, national minorities, migration, and border studies, and he is an active contributor to various academic and public discussions related to these themes. In addition to his research, he has taught numerous undergraduate and postgraduate courses, supervising several PhD students and conducting research that emphasizes the lived experiences of minority populations in border regions.
