Biography

Rubén Ortiz-Torres is an artist who joined the Visual Arts Department at the University of California, San Diego, in Fall 2001. Starting his career in the early 1980s as a photographer, printmaker, and painter, he earned his M.F.A. from the California Institute of the Arts in 1992. A Mexican-born artist, Ortiz-Torres has been living and working in Los Angeles since 1990 and is regarded as one of today's leading Mexican artists, particularly noted as an innovator in Mexican postmodernism since the 1980s. Over the last decade, he has produced a diverse body of work across various media, including extensive series of photographs, altered readymades, feature films, videos (including 3D), large-scale video installations, major painting series, sculptures, customized cars, machines, photocollages, and performances in curated exhibitions. His work has been showcased in 25 solo exhibitions and over 100 group shows across the United States, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, along with more than 50 screenings of his films and video works. Ortiz-Torres's contributions to art have been covered in 150 written pieces in mainstream media outlets such as Los Angeles and New York Reforma, La Jornada (Mexico), El Pais (Spain), as well as significant art publications with international reach including ArtForum, Frieze, and Flash Art.
