Dr. ir. Rudy Helmons started his professional career as a research engineer focused on soil-tool-water interactions at IHC MTI, the research department of Royal IHC, while simultaneously pursuing his PhD. In 2017, he defended his PhD research with the distinction 'cum laude', which focused on rock excavation in the context of water, deep-sea mining, and drilling dredging applications. After completing his doctorate, Rudy moved to the Maritime Transport Technology department (3ME) at TU Delft, joining the research group on Dredging Engineering, serving as an assistant professor in offshore dredging engineering responsible for education and research related to subsea engineering and deep-sea mining. He has a solid background in mechanical engineering and fluid mechanics with progressive applied research experiences in the dredging and offshore mining industries, mainly on the interfacing of equipment with water and seabed. Rudy has been involved in several deep-sea related projects such as EXHADERO3D and JPI-Oceans Mining Impact II, and he is presently the project coordinator for the Blue Harvesting project (an EIT Raw Materials upscaling initiative) and PLUMEFLOC funded by NWO. In 2021, Rudy was appointed as an adjunct associate professor for deep-sea mining at NTNU, Norway. His principal research interests encompass soil-water-machine interactions, near-field turbidity flows, and selective excavation processes.
