Biography

Rudy Wijnands is a Professor at the University of Amsterdam, specifically at the Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy. He completed his PhD in 1999 and has held prestigious fellowships at the Center for Space Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the astronomy group at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. In 2004, he rejoined the Anton Pannekoek Institute and became a full professor in 2017. His research focuses on the extreme physics of neutron stars and black holes, particularly investigating how these objects interact with accreting matter. Wijnands employs data from the largest telescopes, both in space and on Earth, to explore accretion processes under extreme densities. He is pioneering new observational methods using ground-based observatories to study cosmic explosions, including supernovae and gamma-ray bursts. In addition to his research, Wijnands teaches undergraduate and master's courses in Physics and Astronomy, particularly in observational astronomy using the Anton Pannekoek Observatory's telescopes.
