Biography

Ruiting Lan is a Professor of Medical Microbiology at the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, UNSW Sydney. He teaches medical microbiology to science and medical students. Ruiting completed his undergraduate degree in China and earned his PhD from the University of Sydney in 1992, followed by postdoctoral training at the same institution. He joined UNSW as a Senior Lecturer in 2002 and was promoted to Professor in 2018. Ruiting's research focuses on epidemiology and genomic characterization of several pathogens, including Bordetella pertussis, Shigella flexneri, and Salmonella. His contributions include the development of the core genome concept, which is fundamental to understanding bacterial evolution, and a multilevel genome typing (MGT) scheme for Salmonella Typhimurium. He has published extensively in leading journals, contributing significantly to public health interventions through his work in whole genome sequencing and outbreak investigations.
