Biography

Rukmali Wijayarathna is an Early Career Researcher focusing on Reproductive Immunology at the Hudson Institute of Medical Research. Her research encompasses unique immunoregulatory mechanisms in the male reproductive tract and the impact of inflammation due to infections on fertility and men's reproductive health. Wijayarathna completed her Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka and obtained her PhD through a joint program between Monash University and Justus-Liebig University in Germany, under the supervision of Professor David de Kretser. Her dissertation focused on the roles of pleiotrophic growth factors such as activins and their binding protein, follistatin, in the male reproductive tract. Wijayarathna is actively engaged in research that contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals related to education and biomedical research. Her work has been recognized with various awards including the Anna Steinberger Trainee Merit Award and Outstanding Young Scientists award in 2019, and she is involved in multiple research projects aimed at improving male reproductive health.
