Dr. Rumi Chunara

Biography

Rumi Chunara is an Associate Professor at NYU Tandon School of Engineering, where she is jointly appointed in the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Biostatistics at the School of Global Public Health. Her research focuses on the integration of data science within public health, emphasizing machine learning and data mining techniques to solve public health challenges. She is also dedicated to investigating algorithmic fairness in the design and application of these technologies within societal systems. Chunara's work aims at promoting equity through her research projects, which investigate socio-environmental determinants of health and leverage AI technologies. She has received numerous accolades, including the NSF CAREER award and recognition as one of MIT Technology Review's Top 35 Innovators Under 35. Her educational background includes a Ph.D. from MIT in Health Sciences and Technology and a Master's degree from Harvard-MIT in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Chunara is active in various research centers and labs, including the Center for Urban Science Progress (CUSP) and the Visualization Imaging Data Analysis Center (VIDA), where she promotes interdisciplinary research and the application of data in health and urban science domains.
