Professor Dr. Rupam Mahmood

Biography

Rupam Mahmood is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta. His research focuses on developing scalable general learning mechanisms and reinforcement learning algorithms for real-time systems that control physical robots. Currently, his work involves creating a research program centered around continual robot learning using onboard computers, emphasizing the ability of robots to learn and adapt in real-time as they interact with their environments. By understanding and addressing the challenges of continual learning, especially within resource-constrained environments, he aims to advance the general intelligence capabilities of robots. His work is pivotal in ensuring that AI systems can learn and retain useful past knowledge while adapting to new changes. In addition to his research, Rupam teaches courses on reinforcement learning, guiding students through the foundations, design, and applications of RL in complex, uncertain environments.
