Biography

Rupert Beale is a Group Leader at the Francis Crick Institute, specializing in Cell Biology and Infection. He completed his undergraduate medical degree before developing a fascination with immunology, which led him to undertake a PhD at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, part of the Cambridge MB/PhD program. Following his higher medical training, he served as a Clinical Lecturer in Nephrology and continued his work in cell biology and immunology. Beale has made significant contributions to the understanding of the direct interaction between influenza viruses and the autophagy machinery. He established his own laboratory with support from the MRC Clinician Scientist Fellowship, transitioning to the Crick Institute to lead a new clinical group. His unique expertise combines clinical practice as an Honorary Consultant Nephrologist with cutting-edge research in virology and infectious diseases.
