Dr. Rupert Cox

Biography

Rupert Cox received his MA and PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Edinburgh, finishing in 1998. He has held fellowships at the Royal Asiatic Society and the Japan Society for Promotion of Science, and secured grants from the British Academy, Japan Foundation, Economic and Social Research Council, and the Wellcome Trust. He has taught at Edinburgh, Oxford Brookes, and SOAS in London, and has served as a research fellow at Kyoto University and Okinawa College of Technology. His research interests intersect art, science, and anthropology, focusing on innovative forms of public engagement. Currently, he investigates the politics of noise and perspectives on acoustic science within sound studies, chiefly in Japan. His notable works include inquiries into Zen Arts and the concept of 'copying culture' in Japan, exploring sound practices and their implications on sensory ethnography. His ongoing research addresses the cultural history of sound in military contexts and its ecological impacts, particularly concerning Okinawa's militarized environments.
