Biography

Ruslan Medzhitov's laboratory studies the biology of inflammation, focusing on mechanisms of homeostasis and allergic immunity in various disease states. His research explores host-pathogen interactions, specifically how microbial infection induces changes in immune response and how the immune system adapts its response over time to optimize protection while minimizing pathology. He investigates the fundamental processes of inflammation, including its regulatory mechanisms, and its connections to metabolism, aging, and cancer. Furthermore, Medzhitov studies gene expression control in macrophages in response to stimulation by Toll-like receptors, examining gene regulation at multiple levels. He aims to elucidate the roles of both the innate and adaptive immune systems in health and disease, contributing significantly to the understanding of immune tolerance and the homeostatic role of macrophages in inflammation.
