Biography

Russ Algar is a Professor at the Department of Chemistry at the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on luminescent materials, fluorescence types, photophysical processes, and the development of analytical applications using luminescent nanoparticles and luminophores with special emphasis on bio/chemical sensing and imaging. His innovative work includes creating novel bioprobes, point-of-care diagnostic devices, and understanding nanoparticle interfaces for improved biosensing performance. He aims to exploit nanotechnology to develop low-cost, portable diagnostic devices for on-site medical use, significantly impacting healthcare cost and accessibility, especially in rural Canadian communities and developing areas. His research also includes intracellular sensing with FRET-based probes to quantitatively track biochemical processes at the cellular level. Prof. Algar has held positions such as Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Biochemical Sensing and has been awarded the Governor General's Academic Gold Medal.
