Dr. Russell Berman

Biography

Professor Berman joined Stanford's faculty in 1979 and has been a significant contributor in the field of Humanities and Comparative Literature. He was awarded a Mellon Faculty Fellowship and the Bundesverdienstkreuz by the Federal Republic of Germany. Berman has served in various administrative capacities at Stanford, including Chair of German Studies and Director of the Overseas Studies Program. He was the President of the Modern Language Association in 2011 and is currently the Faculty Director for Comparative Literature at Stanford while being a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution. His extensive teaching and administrative experience are complemented by his editorial role with the journal Telos and previous advisory positions with the U.S. State Department's Policy Planning Staff. Berman's academic appointments include professorships in German Studies and Comparative Literature, and he has taught in various programs, including the National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Seminars for College Teachers.
