Biography

Russell Gruen is the Dean of the College of Health and Medicine at The Australian National University. He is a specialist trauma surgeon with a PhD in health services research and post-doctorate qualifications in health policy and medical ethics from Harvard Business Management. In 2009, he became the world's first Professor of Surgery and Public Health at Monash University, where he served as the Director of the Australian National Trauma Research Institute. In 2015, he moved to Singapore as the Director of the Institute of Health Technologies and Vice-Dean of the new Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine at Nanyang Technological University, in partnership with Imperial College London. His research focuses on health system innovations, particularly in resource-poor settings. His doctoral thesis addressed outreach services to enhance access to specialist care for remote Aboriginal communities. He is currently a Lancet Commissioner on Global Surgery and serves as the President of the Alliance for Surgery and Anaesthesia Presence, which supports global surgical careers. His work has included the development of the Australian Trauma Registry and involvement in the Australia-India Grand Challenge Project for Trauma System development in India, as well as co-founding the Global Alliance for Care of the Injured.
