Russell P. Hall is the J. Lamar Callaway Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Dermatology at Duke University and a Professor of Immunology. His research primarily focuses on the pathogenesis of autoimmune blistering skin diseases, particularly immune-mediated skin disorders. His laboratory investigates the role of mucosal immune responses in conditions such as dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) and associated gluten-sensitive enteropathy (GSE). Current studies aim to understand the systemic effects of dietary wheat proteins in patients with DH, exploring patterns of cytokine activation and inflammatory cell engagement in the gut, skin, and circulation. Moreover, Hall is researching the mechanisms behind organ-specific autoimmune diseases like bullous pemphigoid and pemphigus vulgaris, particularly the relationship between auto-antibody epitopes and disease activity along with the role of B cells in the production and maintenance of these auto-antibodies. Clinical trials for pemphigus and bullous pemphigoid are being conducted alongside mechanistic studies.
