Biography

The Vance Lab is dedicated to understanding the complex interrelationships between pathogens and their hosts. The research aims to apply modern biological tools and genetics to explore various molecular-level questions about the presence of pathogenic bacteria, how these bacteria are distinguished from harmless counterparts, and the innate immune mechanisms that protect host cells. Additionally, the lab investigates the strategies pathogens use to evade host defenses. Dr. Russell Vance, a Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at UC Berkeley, is also an HHMI Investigator. His work in immunology and infectious diseases has implications for public health, cancer therapies, and overall immune system response to pathogens. In recognition of his contributions to cancer immunotherapy, he collaborates with the Bakar Fellowship Program to develop strategies that disable cancer cells' abilities to block interferon production, a key protein that triggers immune responses.
