Biography

Rustem Ismagilov is the Ethel Wilson Bowles Robert Bowles Professor of Chemistry at the California Institute of Technology and serves as the Merkin Institute Professor and Director of the Jacobs Institute for Molecular Engineering. He received his B.S. from the Higher Chemical College of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1994 and completed his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1998. Ismagilov's research interests include the development of complex reaction networks, microbial communities, and microfluidic technologies that enable ultrasensitive biomarker measurements. His lab, known as the Ismagilov Lab, focuses on innovative diagnostics that improve global health, particularly concerning human microbiomes and their interactions. The lab has pioneered droplet-based microfluidics, which are integral in understanding and controlling complex biological systems. Ismagilov has held notable positions, including Miles Professor at Caltech from 2011 to 2013 and Bowles Professor since 2013, with significant contributions to the field of chemical biology and engineering.
