Dr. Rutger Ploeg

Biography

Rutger J. Ploeg is a Professor of Surgery and Head of the Division of Transplant Biology at the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, University of Oxford. Born in The Hague, Netherlands, he was educated at the University of Leiden and trained as a surgeon at Leiden University Medical Centre. He conducted a research fellowship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison under Dr. F.O. Belzer from 1986 to 1988, which ignited his interest in organ donation and the mechanisms of ischaemia and reperfusion injury in transplantation. Ploeg received his PhD cum laude from the University of Leiden in 1991 and went on to complete a clinical ASTS fellowship at the University of Wisconsin Hospital & Clinics between 1991 and 1993. He later served as a Consultant Surgeon at the University Medical Centre Groningen, where he became a Professor of Surgery in 2001 and Head of the Divisions of Abdominal Surgery and Transplant Surgery & Organ Donation in 2002. His professional activities span national and international responsibilities, including board memberships with Eurotransplant and the Dutch Transplantation Foundation, and serving as an Associate Editor for the American Journal of Transplantation. Appointed Chair of Transplant Biology at Oxford in June 2011, Ploeg focuses on initiatives to improve organ preservation and transplantation outcomes, including the establishment of national consortia aimed at optimizing donor management and increasing the quality of retrieved organs. He is actively involved in research that addresses organ injury mechanisms and aims to enhance organ viability for transplant through innovative medical strategies and technologies.
