Biography

Ruth E. Blake is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Yale University, where she specializes in stable isotope geochemistry, geomicrobiology, astrobiology, and marine biogeochemistry. Her research focuses on the microbial cycling of elements such as phosphorus, sulfur, and iron in marine sediments and the deep subseafloor biosphere. Blake investigates the evolution of the phosphorus cycle and the role of phosphoenzyme reaction mechanisms using oxygen isotope paleoproxies. Her work extends to the study of microbial communities in extreme environments like volcanic hot springs in St. Lucia and the geological history of microbial processes in extraterrestrial systems.
