Biography

Ruth Chambers creates works in ceramic sculpture and ceramics-based installation, utilizing innovative approaches and incorporating media. Her current porcelain objects, modeled after botanical subjects through direct observation, address concepts of careful looking, beauty, consumption, temporality, and alignment with life traditions. Chambers' installations playfully and decoratively intervene in disputes, interact with architectural structures, and incorporate foliage garden-inspired porcelain ornamentation and found materials through image projection. Her work explores themes surrounding the human body, medicine, and architecture, questioning materiality and immateriality. As a founding member of the Regina-based Art Science collective Petri's Quadrille, she has published extensively on contemporary craft and ceramics theory and is an active participant in conferences, symposia, and academic panels. Chambers has taught at the University of Regina since 1994, where she leads the Ceramics Program and serves as Graduate Program Coordinator in the Department of Visual Arts. She has also held positions as Associate Dean in the Faculty of Fine Arts and as Department Head of Visual Arts.
