Biography

Professor Ruth Harris specializes in Modern History at the University of Oxford. Her research focuses particularly on France during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with an interdisciplinary approach that combines cultural history with themes of religion, gender, medicine, and science. She has examined the emergence of the 'insanity defense' in Paris and how it relates to concepts of criminal anthropology and legal responsibility. Her work includes a detailed study of the Dreyfus Affair, which analyzed the significant political commitment and the conventional politics surrounding this cause célèbre. In 2010, she was awarded the Wolfson Prize for her contributions to the field. Her notable publications include 'Man on Devil's Island: The Alfred Dreyfus Affair That Divided France’ and 'Lourdes: Body and Spirit in the Secular Age', among others. Currently, she is embarking on a large research project that explores the links between religious revivalism in South Asia and the West, including the influences of figures like Gandhi and Romain Rolland, and the connections between Anagarika Dharmapala and Swami Vivekananda with Western thought.
